Storage
Premium home and commercial battery storage from Tesla, Sonnen, and Sungrow — store captured energy for use when the sun goes down or the grid is unavailable.
Back to homeTesla Powerwall 3 Series
The latest generation Tesla home battery — a fully integrated hybrid system with built-in solar inverter and massive 11.5 kW continuous output, designed to power an entire home through a blackout.
SpecificationsUnlike the Powerwall 2, the Powerwall 3 includes a built-in solar inverter, letting rooftop panels plug directly into the battery with ~97.5% solar-to-grid efficiency.
More than doubles the Powerwall 2's 5 kW to 11.5 kW continuous — a single unit can run ducted air conditioning, electric ovens, and EV chargers simultaneously during an outage.
Dedicated Powerwall 3 Expansion units add capacity (kWh) without extra inverter hardware, lowering the cost per kWh when building a larger system.
Three-phase options balance heavy loads evenly across all lines without complex external phasing equipment for homes or commercial properties.
Storm Watch auto-charges to 100% before severe weather, Time-of-Use load shifting powers the home from battery during peak rates, and Off-Grid Backup transitions in under a second.
Sonnen
Led by the sonnenBatterie Evo and the modular sonnenBatterie Hybrid 9.53, Sonnen focuses on high cycle life, extreme safety, and Virtual Power Plant (VPP) integration. Where Tesla prioritises raw peak power, Sonnen focuses on premium Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO₄) chemistry and long-term durability.
sonnenBatterie Evo
sonnenBatterie Hybrid 9.53
Cobalt-free Lithium Iron Phosphate provides superior thermal stability — virtually eliminating thermal runaway risk — and supports an industry-leading 10,000-cycle warranty vs. the typical 3,000–4,000.
The sonnenEvo transitions into backup mode in under a second during outages and can reboot itself from connected rooftop solar, keeping charged through extended multiday blackouts.
The proprietary energy controller dynamically trades energy, participating in frequency control and grid stabilisation programs to offset electricity bills.
AC-Coupled (Evo) works with any existing solar inverter; Hybrid / DC-Coupled (9.53) connects directly between panels and inverter for new installs wanting a single inverter unit.
Sungrow
Sungrow's residential energy storage lineup — led by the flagship SBR Series and the heavy-duty SBH Series — is built around high-voltage, stackable Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO₄) modules. Unlike all-in-one wall units like the Tesla Powerwall 3, Sungrow uses a modular "battery tower" system connecting directly to Sungrow's single-phase and three-phase hybrid inverters.
SBR Series (Standard Residential)
SBH Series (High-Capacity / 3-Phase)
Floor-standing tower design — 3.2 kWh (SBR) or 5.0 kWh (SBH) modules stack with internal connectors, eliminating exposed high-voltage cables and making expansion straightforward.
Native high-voltage systems (~100–600 V+) transfer DC power directly from solar through Sungrow hybrid inverters with minimal conversion losses for higher round-trip efficiency.
100% Depth of Discharge with 30 A (SBR) to 50 A (SBH) discharge handles heavy surges; backup switching occurs in under 20 milliseconds with a compatible hybrid inverter.
Pairs with Sungrow hybrid inverters and smart meters via the iSolarCloud platform — live monitoring, grid import/export control, and firmware updates with no third-party controllers.
Core strengths & key differences
Winner: Tesla Powerwall 3
11.5 kW continuous runs ducted aircon, induction cooktops and EV charging during a blackout. Sungrow delivers ~9.6 kW backup; Sonnen focuses on essential circuit backup (~5 kW).
Winner: Sungrow
97% round-trip efficiency loses less energy as heat than Tesla's ~89%. Generally the lowest cost per kWh of usable storage, especially with an existing Sungrow inverter.
Winner: Sonnen
10,000-cycle warranty far surpasses standard offerings — engineered for households cycling hard multiple times daily or participating in VPP trading networks.
Winner: Sungrow
Start small (e.g. 9.6 kWh) and add 3.2 kWh modules later up to 25.6 kWh per tower. Tesla requires purchasing large fixed 13.5 kWh blocks to add storage.
